To Cry or Not To Cry
As a parent, you will always remember the moment your new baby entered the world. At that instant, your desire to protect and care for that child overshadowed every other obligation you’ve ever had. Then, two or three weeks into that precious baby’s life, you find yourself at wit’s end trying to figure out why your baby is crying constantly. Seemingly hours on end of comfortless crying, trying all the conventional wisdom available and yet you’re still unable to help this helpless baby.
If your baby is otherwise healthy and there are no other reasonable explanations for your child’s incessant crying, chances are, he or she is experiencing colic. While colic still remains a bit of a mystery as to what causes it, it generally shows up when the baby is two to three weeks old and is characterized by crying more than three hours in a row, on more than three days a week, for a period of three weeks or more. It puts enormous strain on everyone in the house, both physically and emotionally. Traditionally, pediatricians will tell you there’s nothing you can do and it’s not harmful to the baby, so just tolerate it. After all, they’ll probably outgrow it by four months of age. But what could be worse for new parents to hear, who want nothing more than to comfort their child?
Thankfully, modern research is becoming more available, showing that gentle chiropractic care can help reduce the symptoms of colic! In a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, the summary concludes:
In this study, chiropractic manual therapy improved crying behavior in infants with colic. The findings showed that knowledge of treatment by the parent did not appear to contribute to the observed treatment effects in this study. Thus, it is unlikely that observed treatment effect is due to bias on the part of the reporting parent.

While it is true that allowing colic to go unchecked isn’t going to cause a life-threatening illness, something not to easily dismiss is what developmental milestones the child might be missing because of the constant crying. When a baby is consumed with distress, it leaves no time for the crucial neurological development that takes place in a baby’s brain during that first year. In fact, a study done in 2004 shows a correlation between infants who cry uncontrollably without an obvious cause (i.e. colic) after 12 weeks of age may be at risk for lower IQ scores and poorer fine motor skills by the time they reach 5 years of age.
